We were thrilled to assist Australian Ginners’ Association to craft a brand that’s all about approachability and industry connection. We wanted the logo to be warm and welcoming, like a handshake - speaking to all involved in the cotton supply chain.

Our logo is inspired by the infinity symbol, with a twist! We added a third circle to make the shape into a cotton boll. The top circle has been given a ‘saw’ edge - an important part of the ginning process where fast-moving circular saws grip the fibres and pull them through narrow slots to separate seeds from the fluffy white stuff. This logo shows this process in a simplified and symbolic way.

This local Toowoomba school prioritises the well-being of all members – spiritually, physically, mentally, and emotionally - all with the mission of 'Success through industry'. We were thrilled to assist in their rebrand - including logo, stationery, signage and templates. Good Samaritan College has a brand that its students and staff (and we) are proud of.

The logo shape created for Good Samaritan College is made up of open hands that are offering help, and also visualises flames of the Holy Spirit and togetherness. The colours used represent land, earth, sand, and sky. Each shape within the symbol is a different colour in order to show that each person is unique, but when they come together it creates unity.

Just like quilting, hours of labour and love go into every logo we design. This little one looks great across every branding element of Pauline’s business - product labels, expo banners, gift vouchers and website.

This logo consists of a geometric symbol of overlapping threads. Black Canvas rejuvenated the ASPA brand with a new youthful logo, whilst maintaining the original colour palette for an easy transition from old to new.

This logo features a stylised 'Australia' symbol that visually shows that the Association incorporates all of Australia, and is fitting with the ASPA mission - 'to encourage members to work together to achieve excellence in Principalship for the benefit of young Australians'. An Aboriginal dot pattern has been used in the branding to give connection to the strong indigenous links of the organisation.

Our all-time favourite part of this creativity gig is to design logos and develop brands.

Our style is simple and streamlined. We love that when we help in this early phase, a platform for all future communication is created and helps bring confidence of presentation to everything that follows. We have designed at least a logo a week for the last ten years and are proud to say that many of our designs are still going strong. The logo process is an exhausting but a rewarding one – so many hours invested into such a small mark!

One of the greatest constants we have had in our ten year journey is sisterhood.

How fun to work on the Winter Fashion Campaign for the Wintergarden shopping centre in the Queen Street Mall. This fantastic VIP event was held in-centre - complete with a life size snow globe, free flowing Moet, ice-blue themed nibbles and plenty of VIP shopping specials for guests.

Hampton Festival

To get a taste of the good life, attending the Hampton Festival really is a must for the month of May. The unique escarpment positioning of Hampton sees an abundance of delicious produce grown and Sunday May 17 will be a celebration of these gourmet, artisan grown, culinary delights. There must be something special in the soil, for the 'high country' is also a rich breeding ground for artists and creatives alike. Black Canvas were honoured to be asked to revamp the logo for what will be the festival's 13th year. The very welcoming village at Hampton has invited us all to come along to enjoy party.

At Black Canvas we are very aware that our portfolio is our biggest asset. Everyday someone phones, emails, drops in, or enquires through our website after checking out our online gallery. This is the biggest blessing to us because, by nature we are shy, introverted and not ones to sell ourselves or blow our own trumpet. So how do you overcome the great divide between natural born UN-salespeople and getting work through the door? Our tool of choice is a powerful portfolio. One that sells for us. Its big, bold, extroverted and out-there – all the things that our personalities are not. This is true of any business, and in no way exclusive to our industry. It doesn’t matter if you are in construction, consultancy or cake decorating… evidence of your experience is a powerful tool when marketing to potential new clients. By showcasing what you can do and what you have done previously, you establish credibility in your industry. A portfolio is testament of your abilities and helps reach those who might want to engage your services or utilise your product for the first time.

In today’s new world of buying and selling we have so much choice before us. Before a commitment to purchase is made, there now comes an important phase of the buying process… research. During the research phase, consumers seek confirmation of their purchase decision through reviews, testimonials, case studies, imagery or videos.

A big investment of time and energy goes into preparing a portfolio - but the rewards will make it all worthwhile! So, take the time to record the work you have done. If you are an architect, schedule an appointment to take photographs of the building you designed at a later date when landscaping has been established. If you are a cake decorator, take a moment to record your creation before it gets devoured. Better yet, why not request a few photos be taken at the event that shows your cake at centre stage and the delighted looks on the faces of guests. If you are a hairdresser, see if your client won’t mind getting before-and-after shots to share on social media. Show others the transformation you can create by a visit to your salon. It is all about inspiring others with what you can do and telling them about the impact of your product or service.

If you are in an industry where visuals won’t work, use words to paint the picture. Case Studies, for example, help tell the stories of your customers by giving a real-life scenario. These experiences can be compelling because they are engaging and help relate a potential client to what you can offer. Describe who your client is, set the scene of their situation or difficulty, finally describe how your product or service helped save the day. The inclusion of testimonials can provide additional evidence. If those testimonials come from companies, display their logos to further enhance credibility and connection. Having a third party endorse your brand for you, can mean a great deal more than when you say it yourself.

Your portfolio of past experience is a powerful marketing tool and time needs to be invested into showcasing what you can do. We do this by utilising moments of down-time in our business and taking advantage of opportunities as they happen. By having a clear focus and defined procedure in place – any member of staff can be called upon to help achieve the end vision of a powerful portfolio. Start 2015 with a plan and get all team members on board with the end result. Use quality imagery and keep design simple, cohesive and in line with your brand. Don’t leave customers guessing as to what it is you do, who you have helped previously and how you might be able to assist them into the future.

By adding a bit of the Black Canvas magic to their brand – we have given the Toowoomba based accounting and financial planning firm a fresh new look – without touching their corporate colours or logo

They employ a dedicated team committed to delivering innovative and practical civil, structural and geotechnical engineering solutions across Southern and Central Queensland. Their new logo highlights this dedicated service area on a simplified symbol of Queensland and these shapes also are symbolic of the lowercase
letters ‘b’ and ‘a’.

Wellcamp – New Airport for Toowoomba

We kicked off the year with a really exciting project – designing a logo and brochure for the new airport at Wellcamp, an impressive project being undertaken by Wagners. This will be Toowoomba’s first jet-capable airport, expected to be operational in 2014. The new logo features bold areas of colour and is bright, modern and energetic.

How did Black Canvas get its name?

We have been asked a lot lately how we came to be known as Black Canvas… Well the boring truth is… it wasn’t given too much thought really! Blank Canvas was typed into the government search incorrectly and wha lah… Black Canvas was born. The name was available, we thought it sounded ultra mysterious – so we decided, ‘yep, we’ll go with that’.

The criteria for us was…

A. Do you say it how you spell it? / Is it easy to say?

(And yes, this did involve brain-storming sessions whilst clapping out syllables)

B. It should not include our own names (anonymity is a wonderful thing for us shy, retiring types)

C. We don’t care if it doesn’t say what we do (our brand can do that)

D. Is it memorable and unique? (without being crazy-weird)

In our very humble opinion, we think that it is not so much your name, but the brand behind the name that makes a business sing. The brand is the way you present yourself, it is the promise you give your customer, it is in the culture and atmosphere created around the product you sell. The name-game can halt the process of starting a business, before it has even begun. What a tragedy!

But really, we like our name because we do love our ‘canvas’. We all have various ways of expressing ourselves and for us, it is through design. Although not visual artists, our canvas is of a different kind… we love to use our time and talents to serve others through design, helping give businesses & organisations a confidence boost by making them look as good as they feel. (Who doesn’t love a make-over!) A blank canvas or empty piece of paper – can sometimes be a daunting thing. Where do I start? How do I fill this space? In one way or other – we hope to help do that for you. We have lots of experience and creative talent to ‘fill the page’ – hence the reason why our canvas is ‘black’. We’re not blank.
